Book Reviews

I bet you could sometimes find all the mysteries of the universe in someone’s hand. – Benjamin Alire Sáenz ― Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

I would like to start being a bit too personal… I cannot overcome the wave of emotions that I felt with this book. This is the kind of book that will just take away your breath and concentration. Nothing else is there for you to do or to care, just keep reading! I fell in love with the characters, and I did feel identify with their struggle.

I cried with this book, mostly with the ending… but still I cried, not because it is sad or horrible, but because I just could not hold the happiness and the sweet honey that dripped out of the last pages.

The archetypes in this book are so clear and so well used, the desert, the war, the rain, summer, the thunder, and the storms. The solitude, the inner struggle, and the constant fight with oneself, the incessant look up for something to clean your soul, something to make you feel better, the lookup for love, and the foreshadowing of the shocking truth. This book and its archetypes go beyond on what to do after school and what career one wants, but it focuses on the struggle with one’s sexuality, one’s identity, one’s love, and one’s life in general.

One aspect that I loved about this book is that the author highlights the importance of the family in one’s life. It is not the typical book in which the parents are the nemesis or the villains. It is lovely how they support the characters decisions, choice of life, and the most important, who they really are. The author also provides a fresh image of the adults in this book because he shows the grown-ups as immature and happy, mature and psychological damaged, vulnerable, understanding human beings, and not the typical parents and adults who do not understand their sons and daughters.

There is the real and human experience that teaches how love can be found in the most amazing and harmless way, how our actions come from somewhere really deep in ourselves, how summer such as the rainy season can give you the sweetest and honest adventures into one’s universe. There is one secret that we need to discover and it is love. Real and pure love and this book is the perfect example of the longing live that some people are tireless looking for.
