A friend of mine and I are running a book club at work, and I had to choose something simple to start with or to understand. We selected this book to start it! and it was such a great decision!
We got the audiobook and the ebook, so we did the immersion reading feature! (This is not an ad or anything… I am not there yet XD) It was such an easy read and such a good experience! It literally took me only 3 hours to read/listen to it! I loved it! It was such a unique experience and the narration was so nice!
The story was so easy and I could relate to it so much. It was funny because my friend saw a lot of symbols, but all I was seen were gender roles and gender “issues”. I like the characters a lot and Jess was for me one of my favorite ones. I really liked how he found a friend, a real friend, in Leslie who was so different from the rest of the people in school. He had so much pressure coming from his family, his classmates, and society in general and that is why he was behaving the way he was; but Leslie came to make the change in his life to transgress all those gender roles imposed. Leslie wearing only “boyish” clothing and being so smart was such a refreshing character. I liked so much how from the first appearance she shows how different she is. I like so much that Leslie is like all of us because she read a lot. I do not like Shakespeare but she did read, and I loved that of her.
I really liked Jess simplicity and how he was so different from the rest of people. I see all the differences between Jess and his father, and how his father is also a victim of society as he was expecting his kid to be a man. However, the scene when his father caught him running after the horrible news, for me is more like the turning point for him. I gave me the impression that his father saw how Jess was so emotional and how he accept him by picking him up. I am not saying that Jess had some sort of identity crisis related to orientation and anything of the sort, but the way his mother and his father treated him changed so much.
I honestly will keep talking about this book for a while, but I think there is no way to cover all I want to cover nor that you will have the energy to read all that XD I hope you find here some interesting points to discuss and to comment on it as you please!
