“White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.” ― Becky Albertalli, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda: take 2! The audiobook!

Hello, book dragons! Due to all the hype and fuzz for the movie, I decided to reread this book, but this time I listen to it, and here is what I think. *don’t hate me*

fullsizerender

I might be too old for this cheesy-perfect-ending kind of books or maybe I am just too grumpy to see the reliability of such a story and plot. At some point, I wonder if I hated the book that much because it reminds me of myself when I was young, and I don’t think so! but being too moralistic, I find it so “wrong” the idea of encouraging people to meet or establish a relationship over the internet or even applications. Opening yourself to such “adventures” is hoping too much for humanity, and we should not have so much hope. I also find a bit “annoying” the whole happy-ending of the “tortuous” situation that Simon put himself through, and when I say “annoying” I meant more like predictable. The new kind of fairy tale of happy ever after ending.

I am sure that teenagers curse a lot, but Simon has the mouth of a sailor. All the try-hard necessity of pushing cultural references of Harry Potter and Adventure Times… It is like trying too much to be cool and to reach that specific audience. The fact that he got “mad” at someone for not knowing what a Dementor is… it is ridiculous. Also, under my experience, having a secret admirer is, yes, exciting, but it has never a happy ending. If they are hiding or if they show up until the end, you find out that it was not what you had in mind or expected. I am not saying is the same that happened in the book, but they are really similar situations in which they imagined each other, and luckily and ideally they ended up liking each other…

I am not gonna lie, but while listening to the audiobook, I found myself smiling a bit with Blue’s and Simon’s interactions and flirting, and usually the books are better than the movie, but I have my hopes up… like I think I will like the movie more…

In matters of characters, I find them all “fine” but I disliked Liah the most… I mentioned this in the first review here, and the fact of her having her own book… I find it an aberration haha sorry.

You bring up some really interesting points that I mostly agree with, actually. I’m alright with fairy tale endings once in a while, so this one was okay for me. Though I did notice the try-hard instances to be cool and relevant haha. I think Leah needs more room to grow and so a book for her might be what’s needed in order for us to get a handle on her true character. I want to read it to see how the author’s further developed her story and character!

LOL, I’ve heard a bit of that too. Guess I’ll just to see how Leah fares in her solo debut.

I love your honesty, it’s refreshing while reading a review. i haven’t read this book, and am kind of curious about it but I think this might be a “let’s wait for it to come to Netflix” sort of thing for me. I really enjoyed your review and how you weren’t afraid to give a little glimpse of yourself in there as well. 💕
