Second-hand books – A yes or a no?

Hello, fellow book dragons! and bloggers and readers! We have been around for a while and we have answer questions on tags, and this has been lovely for so long time! I was thinking about my experience in the US and also at second-hand books, and I want to let you know, why I like them!

There are multiple reasons why I should be getting and read a second-hand!

  1. Recycle! You are not cutting another tree for paper! This is like recycling! So you get the same book that someone had, you are not requesting more “new” books and no need to print another one just for you!
  2. Savings! Also, if you get that book used or second-hand book, you are not only helping the planet, but also your pocket! let’s are honest, they are way cheaper and we are not in the position to keep spending so much money on books… and again, for 4 second-hand books, you can get 1 new!
  3. More stories! These books have more stories than the one written! For example, my BF is in the Philippines, so he took his book of Anihillation with him. Now, that book is telling its story and my BF story in another country! So they will have little marks, maybe notes, and even a signature from the previous owner! that is so valuable for me XD
  4. Wrinkles! we hate wrinkles in our books, I get that. If the book is new, you try to take care of it with all your might, but if you see the copy a little beat up, it makes you wonder: “where have you been? which stories do you remember? how many hands have hold you? how did you get all mess up?”
  5. Stress free! I mean if the book is all beaten up, you don’t have to worry that much about taking extrem care of it! XD
  6. The smell! The smell and the yellowish of the sheets! old and wise!

We went to a second-hand book store in Capitol Hill in DC, and I loved it! They had so many books that was almost impossible to walk in! and I got 3 books that I will be taking about soon!

Thank you for reading my quirkness and for wanting to know about our kingdom a bit more! Stay tuned for more about our adventures, tips, tales, and stories!

Now you tell me, what do you think about second-hand books??

All I ever buy is second-hand books. I don’t have the money to spend on brand new books. Also, I just like going to a charity shop or a place and not know what is there. You never know if the books you see and buy are going to be good or not.

Yes, you are right. It adds a lot of mystery to the book haha and sometimes it feels like an adventure to go through all those shelves looking for something that you just don’t know you were looking for haha and at the end, do you really need them new? :/

Well, I have some standards. If the book looks like someone has thrown it about, I refuse to look. I can not stand if it smells too.

I never consider them to be smelly… that is something to pay attention too! and yes, like if they are beaten too much I will think about it, but if they have a wrinkle here and there and all yellowish… I am fine XD

I buy used books. I haven’t gone to a big bookstore and bought a brand new book in a while. They’re cheap and hold their own history.

yes! totally, that is what I told Kay, that they have personality! In my country, the price difference is not that much but I do see the value to them! but I must be honest, I loved Amazon Books Store ❤ haha

I buy second hand books all the time. I also make sure to always review them so that the authors get the recognition they deserve even as they aren’t really getting any money from it.

Oh yes, I didn’t consider the royalties… you make a really good point! Giving something in change like the coverage that your blog gives will be giving something in exchange! that is so nice!

      Thank you for commenting Tina!

Second-hand books are so beautiful to me! That idea of it having a life before I got it, makes me feel like the book is almost magical. That it has had adventures I will never know about, but can appreciate that someone else loved or hated the book before me. I will forever love stores that sell them for all these reasons and more

Totally!! I think I will try to find some of those in my country to see if it worth it. Sometimes they have so many that I don’t even know where to start from XD but 80% is a big number! that is great! ❤

For the past 2 years i have not bought a paper book. Only started this habit again around February, when i realised i could save some money if i bought some books in the charity shop 😀

I have a kindle paperwhite. Love it! It’s so light ❤
I also have the kindle app on my tablet, but i don't like reading on that one cuz of the reflection. I mean, depending on the light, i can actually see myself in the screen while reading and it's kinda disturbing 😀

I have somewhere around 550 books and i'd say 70% of it is digital. Aaaand unread, of course, cuz i'm a hoarder. 😀

we all are to a certain level hoarders :B so I fell you haha I don’t have that many on Kindle yet… I only buy on sale so maybe that is why? XD

BIG YES to second-hand books. Though I love my new books and really cherish, like they have plastic covers while sitting on my shelves, I love secondhand the same. I think I can explain how much I love them by saying I love my writing desk messy. like I also love my desk neat but when it’s messy I love it more because it means, I’ve been busy. Same with secondhand books, I love them because they’ve been busy. They’ve touched some other booklovers’ lives already and they’re touching MY life. It’s amazing.. I think im not making my point clear… hahaha..

you are totally making it clear! I love new books the same, you are right. But the fact that they have been around, and maybe if they have a scratch here and there makes them unique and beautiful and it takes the pressure of being extra careful when carrying them around XD I love the messy part ❤ I am super messy so I get that XD
you know the stories that used books have adds some extra special elements to the love for it :3

Half of my books are from the used bookstore. That’s how I read both ebooks and physical. I get them on sale! I need to go to my used bookstore to trade soon.

There aren’t many here either, but when I go back to my parents house I go to the one there sometimes. Their book prices on young adult are about 10 dollars mostly. The store is about 30 minutes away from their house. But I usually get the ebook from the library or on sale for 1-2.99 after I get the hardback usually. I just like reading both. Ebooks are read at work and the books are read at home sometimes.

I like how you divide them all! Work = ebooks, home = hardbacks haha I tried to read at home and commuting but I don’t have a system haha but you are right if you can get them from the library that makes more sense…and the ones that you really really want… then you get them :3 I usually buy on kindle on sale only haha and I tried to let my Twitter followers about those sales XD
