“I think the heart of every living thing on Earth is beating in my body”― Jandy Nelson, I’ll Give You the Sun

I am in the same kind of state of ecstasy that I got in when reading “Aristotle and Dante discover the Secrets of the Universe.” If you loved that book that much to the point of almost going crazy, you will love this book like you love to lay down on a Sunday afternoon under your blanket reading a book while it is pouring outside your window. This weird and lovely chilly warm that you feel going through your body is the sensation that I got while reading this book.

I mushttps://i2.wp.com/jandynelson.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/sun_375w.jpgt be honest… there are so many quotes that I could have selected for the subject of this publication, but I think I got the perfect one. That quote that expresses the texture and the hallucination that this book makes me feel and see. My heart beat so hard against my chest and beat with Noah’s and Jude’s.

The texture and imagery of this book is so soft, powerful, natural, mesmerizing, and ethereal. Two little gods that fought each other forcing the division of the world. One can picture so easily the explosion of colors and emotions from the characters. The quite forest, the raging ocean, the imagination, and perspective of their inner world. Two galactic twins that will give everything for the other.

The characters are round and dynamic. They go through this transition from kids into teenagers. Jude, contrary to Noah, goes from one stage to another, to another, and then to one more unknown stage. She changes her attitudes, ideas, and intentions through the whole book. Noah, however, goes through some changes and more like a personal struggle for his own sexuality facing on of the most horrible situations that a gay teenager can go through: bullying. One can see really softly how the prejudice and bulling that LGBTQ people are subjects to, which make Noah’s changes more centralized on this aspect. The characters are so well developed. One can see every single trait of these characters, from where they love and hate, to struggle with their sexuality, to become active socially and sexually speaking. The author shows us how siblings and their stories are always intertwined to a level of almost being the same story.

I must be personal here. I love Noah’s passion for his beloved one. I love Jude’s passion for what she believes in and wants to do for her life. I love how emotionally charge is this book. Not just focusing on one single character, and one single issue, but almost covering all the issues that teenagers experience while growing up. Coming of Age is the best genre that I can recommend to everybody, not just because it is beautiful, but because is so full of emotions and love so hard to find out of a book.

“I’ll give you the Sun” is such a strong phrase inside and outside the book. It means so many things at the same time. What one can give up for the sake of someone, what one can give up to be with someone, what the love does to people, how little everything means when you are in love, and how big that love is compared to what surrounds you, and even, how less beautiful everything looks when one is on this infatuated state.

It really caught my attention the story of the origin of the sexes and the myth that we were separated and that we are in a constant look up for that one other half, and even though, I really like the Myth of Androgynous, I do not think that we should actually look for that “other half” since we are complete beings and do not depend on others. However, I will be honest and confess that I want to find that other complete part.

The culture of the family is a really strong theme on this book that is beautifully disguised with colors and art. What will you do to protect your beloved ones? Would you lie? Would you change? Would you even talk to the dead? The problems within the family are so common while one is at the teenage years. Another topic that is imperative on this kind of books is teenagers’ sexuality. Even though they do not have the maturity and the conscious of being sexually active they are sexual beings and must be guided through that stage in life.

I really liked this book; nonetheless, I think that Noah’s resolution of the love conflict happened to fast and missed explanation or at least exposure on the story.

So, the kingdom has given this book:

It seems that your majesty is pleased and the knights have spoken!
