Emergency Contact ― Mary H.K. Choi ― “Penny silent-screamed”

Hello book royalists!

I have been reading my eyes out and not reviewing as much as I wanted to review! But I am sure you get my struggle… right? Right? Please say you do so that I can have some peace of mind!

I was happy enough to be part of the second book club from Diverse Divers in Goodreads! And I was the help I needed to read that book! (not that I needed help or an excuse… I was dying to read it XD)

Tech Summary: Read from February 11, 2019, to February 17, 2019.

From Goodreads and when I wrote my review, I honestly don’t see the “3.77” on the ratings. Like, I don’t understand why… I was so into the book and how the story is mainly them going through a lot of things like… well…life and college. I see the light romance more like a collateral event and not the main event of the book. Yes, they are into each other, and they are each other emergency contact, but they are not focused on that, which is something I really like about the book.

They had to deal with family, friends, addictions, and education. I grant that there wasn’t a resolution to all the issues (I guess?), but when do you get to resolve everything in life in one sitting? The characters, in my opinion, are so well written and some are really appealing. I agree with a fellow blogger (Angelina) that Penny sometimes gave me the need to smack some sense in her. I see some (a lot) of clichés in Penny the gothic-ish, smart ass, low self-steam, hater character, and Sam the tormented artist, but at the end, humor and the parts that were not fully clinches saved the game.

Choi, in my opinion, crafted really good characters and a story simple but enjoyable. I enjoy the book, laughed so hard, and fall for some of the characters (you know who!). There were literally secondary characters that were well constructed and helped developed the characters. They had a minor role in the story, but they helped guide Sam and Penny on the “right” path, which was not to each other but more into resolving their own problems.

I hope you like the book if you get to read it and that you see my point here of why the story made sense for me. However, if you disagree with me, let me know! ❤

Great review! I was honestly a bit underwhelmed by this one, but there were certainly a few moments that made me laugh out loud! The developments of each character, and how they work through dealing with many issues, is executed really well, but unfortunately Penny’s personality really dampened some of my enjoyment of this one.

I totally get that. A choice from the author? Penny would have been way better and more relatable… .maybe someone did feel related… Haha I enjoy it a lot and the cover and that :3
