Pines ― Blake Crouch ―“For every perfect little town, there’s something ugly underneath. No dream without the nightmare.”

I started reading this book and everything was… cool… not too weird… It gave me the creeps… everything was… fine… perfect, but then I just couldn’t take it anymore. This book was killing me slowly. The tension was dripping slowly almost motionless down my throat, the frustration was suffocating me, the horror of the perfection reaching the abnormal level, the pressing pain in my chest as it synced to Ethan’s heart. The lowest of the human instincts bloomed on this book, the darkest side of the human soul a sickness that threaten us to kill us one by one… The unknown and the unanswered questions… that slowly accumulated at the back of my mind…

That is how it feels… to read this book.

I mean if you like to hang at the edge of your sit just because, this is the book for you. You will love it. The first person narrator makes this story more confusing at level of being amazing! I do not know but when I play a shooter game I just go crazy it is so dizzying and so hard to focus on whatever thing besides the one that is in front of you or what is given to you. The author gives you all the information for you to keep on. He gives you like 2 clues enough to say: “Oh shit, this is just not okay.” All what is happening on Ethan’s adventures connects on one point where you happily stand up from the edge of you chair and yell “I KNEW IT!” but then you are still unable to know what the actual f… is going on.

The anxiety I had with this book is the same kind that I have when I wait for the pizza boy! (I love pizza and I am always scared that he will honk and then leave if I do go outside fast enough) The setting is just perfect for this story. Not only because the story was developed in a little peaceful town surrounded by big and unclimbable  mountains but also because the town itself is so perfect and so artificial and not at the same time. Fog. Rain. Silence. People talking. People having fun. People starring at you. The moon. The cold. The pumping of your heart while reading this book alone in your bedroom…

Ethan, the character, is so complicated to such level. It is like all his past helps to boycotts his sanity, all his wishes, and all his desires are just either too strong or too messed up. There are so many flat characters made to exactly fit the story, the drama, and the destruction of your nerves, but he is just crazy… or not?

I listened to the audio book not too long back. I enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I was happy that it ended in such a way that I could almost enjoy it as a stand alone.

I am so excited that I just found your blog, and that this is the post I first found to read! I haven’t ever read any reviews on this book but I have wanted to try it out since I stumbled on the show when it came out a while back. The show was an absolute TRIP! Did you watch that?! To this day I have no idea what the heck was happening there!
Earlier this year I read Dark Matter by Black Crouch and…again…my mind was BLOWN!! It was so good! Only right now am I really making the connection that that book is by the author who wrote Pines, which is where that crazy TV show came from. And so it all comes full circle with the moral: I still just need to read this book. 😛

Haha I didn’t watch the show! But I wanted it! I was trying to finish the 3 books bit then they changed the main character and some weird things not related to the book happened XD and the director is not my favorite and I don’t have faith in him xD

The books are really good and I am sure you will enjoy them! Thank you for the comment! I have heard so many good things about Black Matter and I want to read it too!

I am happy that I have been able to help you on this! I will love to check out your thoughts on it when you read it!! n.n
