I am going to try to be as objective as possible with the reaction/review of this best seller book. I enjoyed the book, it kept me entertained, and the photos that I was able to take were incredible! I had so many hopes about the saga regardless of all the comments that I read about the book, but, to set the mood, I am happy that I didn’t buy the other books of the saga…
I found the main character to be quite challenging for the story. I understand that this is a young adult book and that its demographic market is young people, but are all young adult books like this now? Mare is this kid that elaborates on this delusion that she is unique and that she is all-mighty and unique. Even though all evidence shows otherwise. Mare thinks that she can save a country on her own, that she has the power and that uniqueness to make a change. Her ego annoyed me! There is a difference between and empower character to this… HOWEVER, her being like this and how the book ended, makes a complete difference. If she has been successful, I would have been mad and the book would have been terrible… even more. I am not sure if I am not used to this characterization, but I have never seen one so egocentric, delusional and so anti-archetypal. Spoiler: it is like when she literary trained once in her life, but then when all crumbled down, she has “all” her training kicked in…. what training? 😒
Her naiveness, ego, and stupidity were a mare (I am so clever hahaha) devise to move the plot. The story was, at a certain point, predictable with the princes “fighting” for the girl, and the mother queen being someone with the powers to control minds was even more obvious. This was all a prelude to the inevitable and logical ending that it had.
I am not gagging out of shock and plot twist, but I am not intrigued enough to see what happens. Another element that I found weird is how the author positions the reader on a medieval world, with electricity, but, still with powers, and after an apocalyptic event. The plot of the first book, for being fantasy, lacked the world-building, and some things didn’t quite make sense. I enjoyed the part of the powers, which was part of the fantasy, but still, the main character ruined the story and the few elections from the author.
If you enjoyed this book, I am happy for you! But if you are still intrigued, you can give it a try! I am happy that I didn’t buy the other 3 books and novellas. My wallet is happy!
