The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – V.E. Schwab – “What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?”

V. E. Schwab starts the novel with a promise of immortality, but the reader’s inability to grasp the endlessness of such a promise will make this novel a forever favorite.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue has become a case study for the literary work. With great intensity, V.E. Schwab describes the novel in one quote foreshadowing the power struggle through its pages. In the initial pages, the author portrays Addie as an independent, strong, and unstoppable woman. Someone who saw the unfairness of the world and someone who fought back. The motif of the number seven is primordial to understanding Addie’s personality, strength to endure, and possibly her end. Likewise, the catalyst of the novel has a centurial literary origin: “faustian bargain” where Addie commits the ultimate mistake of forsaking her soul when the realization of an unwished life is close to coming true.

V.E. Schwab impregnates the novel with different mediums and art. As the plot slowly untangles in impactful events, the reader understands the importance of books, paintings, and artists as the sole and only way to leave a meaningful mark on Earth. As people keep forgetting Addie, she found a way to cultivate ideas and inspiration in the most creative minds. Through paintings, poems, sketches, and music, Schwab and Luc, the god who granted Addie’s wish, allow the main character to navigate the corners of her curse to prove that art is stronger than the gods themselves.

As the author turns Addie’s life through decades of adventures and misfortunes, she turns her novel into a Magnum Opus, questioning even the veracity of the story and making the readers wonder if Addie exists and if we have forgotten about her. Through god-level powers, curses, and magic, V.E. Schwab waves her magic wand creating a beautiful story that feels real. Decade by decade, the novel mutates into a perfect example of Addie’s life: remarkable and unforgettable art, and worth recommending and reading for the decades to come.

Historical, sorrowful, yet romantic and hopeful, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue should become the muse for any upcoming author.

Maybe I missed it, but was there ever a bigger resolution with her freckles? They felt important from the story, but I don’t remember them ever panning out to anything more than an adorable feature

I think it has more to do with the number per se rather than a big secret or plot twist hehe
