What I think about Goodreads! Do you agree?

cropped-header.png
I have nothing against this app or website. On the contrary, I really like it and motivates me, to a certain extent, to keep reading!
I like this little feature to keep track of how much I have read about one book. To know the percentage of what I have read or how much I am missing is just so intoxicating, in a good way. I like that it gives me the option to rate a book, not that this is a unique feature. Once I finish reading a book, that is the first thing I will do. This world is moved by percentages, stats, numbers, and averages, and Goodreads facilitates that to you, so you can also follow up on your improvement. Basic and concise: keep reading darling, you will get there soon!
Some people are obsessed with Twitter or Snapchat, me? Goodreads! I have a wishlist on every single app or website for books, and they are never the same list and Goodreads is always telling you “Have you checked this book?” “We recommend you this one”, like if I am not in enough trouble with all the books that I have in my own queues… and they keep throwing them to my face.
I can sort of put the books on shelves and then forget about the ones I never liked. I categorize them depending on how much I like them or hate them, and it is just not only a matter of love/hate, but you have the opportunity to “meh” them, “love them”, set your own list to read on vacations and so on.
The news feed will give you this little guilty pleasure of “stalking” what other people are reading, their progress, and check their reviews and all that. Basic stuff, seriously.
2017-03-05-photo-00007534Now it comes the little monster of this website/app… the “Reading Challenge.” Your worst nightmare, your nemesis, or just your little competitive friend. I love and hate this thing. I love it if you find it just challenging to set a realistic goal. Why realistic? Because if you push it too much, it stops being fun! What is the fun of reading 80 books a year if at the end you do not remember half of them and you “learn” nothing from them? I do not know the rest of the readers, but I rather quality than quantity! I rather take my time to enjoy the books that I read. I am not saying that those who read 90 books a year are doing it wrong, but I just do not like that. Do not rush! Just go at your own speed, you do not need to prove anything to anybody… seriously.
One thing I do love! Are the quotes! Get those amazing quotes from your favorite book and have them all in your profile! I just like to go over them sometimes and remember how good that book made me feel.
If you are not using Goodreads, but you are thinking about it, I will encourage you to do it! It is fun! But remember, do it wisely and do not let it take the best of you! Your books are your dear friends, so do not let anything get in between you two… or three… or five hundred other friends.

If you wish to check my Goodreads profile, hey! Feel free to go there! You can add me there or even like my Facebook page! The pictures are being uploaded to Instagram too!

Yes, the quotes! I love that aspect of Goodreads, especially on the app when you open it and it’s loading so it gives you a quote about reading/books. Great post!

Aww, thank you very much, Hannah, for reading this old post! I am happy that you enjoy this post!
Oh those quotes, I like them too but not all the time I can read them haha the app charges too fast XD
I hope you like the rest of the contact! I hope we can see each other on another site! 😀

I love goodreads! I kinda use it as my wishlist and to keep track of books i want to not only read, but to buy as well at some point.

It’s connected to my kindle account so all my quotes, notes, highlights are save on goodreads as well.

I love it too! I think mine is too crowded but I enjoy browsing through it and I think it is like the biggest source of bookish knowledge! My Kindles are also linked and I love when I can turn on to the public one of my highlights to talk about that but… I am still waiting for someone to comment on them XD
I keep it also my list for TBR 😀 you can even sign up to get the Kindle deals to your email!

I have been that long there too! I love all those small features and the voting and all that! I don’t like that I have to watch all people like but what can I do? XD

I am in a love/hate relationship with goodreads. I like it because I can look up books and see reviews. But, other than that it doesn’t have much going for it. I can track all the other information in my notebook. I feel like they have not updated it in such a long time as well. Specifically I find that the reading groups need updating to work well. I find myself having books clubs on twitter not on goodreads. The way it is now I find it hard to socialize meaningfully on the site because the way the discussions are set up are not set up as conversations are.

You have a notebook to track what information? haha, I hate reading books! There is so much spam! I get notifications every single moment for what people are saying, and I cannot keep up with that XD
You are totally right, the page feels out of date, the app crashes a lot and lacks features… I haven’t been in a book club in Twitter XD but I have one at work XD but I also agree that it is really hard to socialize with people there, I never get the notifications when people reply or leave a comment :/ like I love when people comment to stuff I have there and I like to talk to them but it is impossible -_-

I have forgotten about the dark side of this site XD thank you!

I track when I get books, books I want to buy, my reading progress (I write the chapter number then highlight when I am done with it), and when I finish a book. When I finish a book I write my positives and negative thoughts then give it a little rating.

Ooh is exactly what you do in Goodreads but in paper. :O interesting hmm
I rather the app even though is a bit stiff xD it is everywhere with me and I can do exactly that but without carrying something extra with me xD

It all comes down to personal preference. I already carry a huge bag for work so I don’t notice an additional notebook in there.

Yeah, I tend to decorate it and such. I don’t use stickers often though, I mainly use markers, pens, and washi tape. 🙂

I barely started using Goodreads this year. So I am a complete noob and still learning haha. Right now, I only use it to keep track of the books I’m reading.

I find the recommendations by Goodreads truly bizarre. I can be reading a high fantasy and it will suggest something like a book on knitting socks. It doesn’t make sense! I usually ignore them except when I glance over to get a good laugh.

Haha that I have never paid attention to xD I usually get the recommendations true the community ❤ haha but I will laugh my ass off if I see a book on shot so knit socks hahaha besides that, I like to know how much time I took me to read a book or when quotes and the give aways even though I haven't win any ever xD

Completely agree about reading at your own pace, I feel different types of books will have you reading at different paces. Thrillers and crime and actually YA too will have you reading fast but other genres have a very cosy, read-at-your-own-pace feel, especially the ones that touch your heart, you want to take your time and enjoy it and feel all the emotions you need to feel.

Oh my God! You feel me totally!!! Okay yes, I agree 10000%! It is like reading All The Light You Cannot See! Or GOT you cannot read them in a sit… Just chill haha take it all in… Don’t die pls xD but there are other books that you can read in matter of days… Just to stress yourself out hahaha

Thank you very much Sophia! For commenting ❤

I love Goodreads! It’s like my own version of Facebook. It holds all the books I read and want to read, and always has neat surprises thanks to all the folks I follow. It could definitely get better over the years and become even more social, but as it is right now, it’s awesome! 😀

This was the first year I did the Reading Challenge, and oh my god I spent so much time stressing over it. I kept looking at my friends’ challenges and thinking “how are you already 20 books into your 75 book goal it’s FEBRUARY!” But I realized most of the books I’ve been interested in recently have been big commitments – a lot of long, dense literature. So I had to just tell myself my goal is not to read as many Stephen King novels in a year as I can (not that I wouldn’t totally do that), but to keep myself reading the books I would be reading anyway.

Long story short, totally get the love/hate with the reading challenge…but otherwise only love for Goodreads.

It means so much to me to see that you read the post, haha, I know it was long and I was rumbling around XD You totally got my point! Why do we put that much pressure? This is supposed to be fun! and yes, nothing wrong in reading all the easy and quick YA of the world, because I love it for the same, haha, but sometimes some books will not let themselves be read that fast XD so adjusted to number that you fill comfortable with and if you still didn’t make, well… that is okay, at least you are reading 🙂
