Editorial Review: A Day in the Life by Andrew Masseurs | Inkish Kingdoms

One day, Michael is living his best life with his family, and the next day, he wakes up to find himself in a world devoid of any human presence. Not only does he have to deal with the sudden disappearance of humanity, but he also has to survive in a world that has changed drastically.

Now, the world is overgrown with abandonment and has become a dangerous land filled with new predatory creatures taken from Michael’s worst nightmares. However, not all is lost since Michael has discovered something, a ray of hope, and he is adamant about losing himself before finding his family again. What would Michael do to see his loved ones again? To what extent would he risk his life to find them? And how much loss can a heart take?

Written in a long breath, Andrew Masseurs creates a dark and tense novella of loss, doubt, and intrigue. One day, we are living our best summer day, and the next, the world has ended, and we are left behind. With so many questions without answers, the main character embarks on a journey of “enjoying” what is the end of the world. Nobody is around, and resources seem infinite; however, later on, he realizes that he might not be alone. Intriguing the reader with rays of hope and Michael’s behavior, Masseurs keeps us going with the promise of possible explanations.

Narrated in a first-person point of view, Masseurs narrows the world of A Day in the Life to the eyes of a character who lives in isolation, leading the reader through a path of doubt and suspicion to the point of turning Michaels’s story into an unbelievable narration of events. Accompanied by music and memories of a perfect lost world, Michael starts to waste away together with the world. Interestingly, Masseurs gives his novel a sense of reality and true human nature through Michael because, instead of attempting to save the world from a cataclysm, he focuses on his survival rather than the delusion of saving the world.

Short yet powerful, A Day in the Life explores human isolation and questions the extent of our knowledge of what is happening in the world and who or what is pulling the strings of our existence and extinction.
