Wild Asses of the Mojave Desert is slightly chaotic in the best style of Sally Rooney novels. In this character-driven story, Lis Anna-Langston introduces us to Skye and her struggles to find herself and her purpose. After escaping her little desert town six years ago, Skye bumbles to accept that her life is a disaster and that everybody seems to have moved on, for the better or for worse. As she collides with the realization that nothing is the same, she undergoes a metaphysical adventure, which puts the exact amount of magic and mysticism that our lives need to make sense.
Highly quotable in a unique voice and style, Anna-Langston invented a sharp, fresh, and accessible story with one of the best yet cynic characters of 2023. Wild Asses of the Mojave Desert overflows with wisdom, loss, and confusion that intensifies the process of getting to know Skye at such a deep and personal level. Langston assembles a set of over-the-top characters, unique to every group of friends, who have their role in getting the lost friend out of the haze of multiple existential crises. With harsh truths and tough love with the right touch of comedy, the reader undergoes the mechanical Tetris-like process of fitting all the pieces of a life worth living.

With witty inner monologues and commentaries, Anna-Lagnston develops Skye’s character in a relatable way that makes it impossible not to root for her despite her flaws. As unique as Skye, the characters who are part of her inner circle are brought to life with such care, allowing the story to flow with the ease of a smile. Even with the multiple interwoven themes of love, friendship, family, and the search for self that collide at the end of the story, the reader tenderly experiences the understanding that everything changes and every decision we take has consequences that lead us to a life we ought to live.
